What is the Colostomy Association?
The Colostomy Association is a registered charity whose prime
role is to provide support and reassurance to anyone who has
or is about to have a colostomy. Colostomy is not a subject
that is openly discussed - hence there is a general lack of
public knowledge on what it's like to have a stoma. With over
70 contact volunteers and a head office team based in Reading,
Berkshire we are dedicated to helping colostomates and their
families.
The original organisation was set up back in 1963 by a lady
called Frances Goodall from the Royal College of Nursing. A
colostomate called Gertrude Swithenbank was visiting patients
at her hospital at the request of one of the registrars. This
had a very positive effect on the patients as they were impressed
that she was leading a full and active life. When Gertrude
mentioned this to Frances the idea of a national association
was born. In 1990 the association moved to Reading from London,
to reduce rental costs. In 2005 we evolved into the Colostomy
Association, a totally independant and self-funding charity.
Now we produce a quarterly magazine, Tidings, and a comprehensive
literature list available to all.

Working with our volunteers and health professionals we aim
to provide:
* Support and advice for colostomates and their families
* Email and telephone support
* A full and comprehensive literature pack
* Visits for those who need it |
