Junior Ostomy Support Helpline - Young Ostomates

Anyone can be affected by stoma surgery, regardless of age. We're able to provide support, information and reassurance to young people and parents who need someone to talk to.

Our Junior Ostomy Support Helpline (JOSH) provides invaluable practical support for parents and carers of young people living with a stoma and other bowel and bladder dysfunctions.

Call JOSH to speak to our team of volunteer parents for confidential, unbiased and practical advice on raising a child with a stoma. We’re able to pair any caller to a parent whose experiences best match their own.

Need to talk? Call 0800 328 4257 and ask to speak to a JOSH parent today.

Other support

Josh the Snow Leopard

Josh the Snow Leopard is a comforting toy for children to take home following a hospital stay for stoma surgery. With details of the JOSH helpline on his tag he is a handy and ever-present reminder to parents and carers of our number and that we are always here to help and support them.

Pediatric wards can order free stocks of our snow leopard by calling us on 0800 328 4257.

Each child that registers with us will also receive a snow leopard.

Sam has a Stoma

Our "Sam has a Stoma" book helps young children become familiar with stoma surgery. Designed as a story/colouring book, it provides the child, as well as their siblings, with information in preparation for surgery, recovery from the operation and return to full activity. To receive a copy in the post contact us at cass@colostomyassociation.org.uk .

Additionally, Dansac booklets entitled 'What's on your tummy, Emil?' and ‘Teen with a Stoma’ are available upon request at the Colostomy Association.

The Breakaway Foundation

The Breakaway Foundation is a UK-wide charity offering support to children with bladder and/or bowel diversions/dysfunction and their families. Since 2006, Breakaway has helped around 300 families, taking them out of isolation and helping them to realise that they are not on their journey alone.

The Breakaway Foundation is now able to support children from birth to 18, meaning that parents will no longer feel alone in those very difficult early years. Visit their website for more information.
